/Goal
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the
theory and practice of debate, with an emphasis on
actual debating.
メッセージ

Let's have fun debating! For much of the class, you will
be working in small groups (your team), so you will get
a lot of support from your classmates. This is a great class
for improving your English.

Students will be able to actively participate in a policy debate. This means they will be able to give constructive
and rebuttal speeches, and be able to participate in cross-examination.

/Class Plan
Students will participate in three separate debates after being given instructions about how to prepare. Preparation will take place in small groups.

/Textbooks, references, materials, etc.
No textbook is required for this class. However, students will be required to bring an electronic
dictionary to every class. Students will also be required to bring a B5 notebook to every class
and are expected to take extensive notes during lectures and group discussions. They will also
have to do research on the debate topics.
学びの手立て
/Way of learning
After some introductory lectures on the principles and terminology of debate, students
will spend the rest of the course putting those principles into practice. Basically, the class will
be divided into three parts: (1) free discussion of controversial topics, (2) preparing for and
participating in a relatively easy debate, and (3) preparing for and participating in a  policy
debate. For the debates, students will work with the members of their team. Students will
also receive some guidance in public speaking, especially as it pertains to debate.
評価
/Evaluation
Students will be evaluated based on the following: notebooks (10%), class participation (10%),
group leader performance (10%), easy debate (30%), and policy debate (40%).
