/Goal
This course will be a practical introduction to professional
translation, focusing primarily on the actual translation
of Japanese and English texts. The aim of this class is to
familiarize students with the skills required to function as
a professional translator.

By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
--understand the fundamental mechanisms of translating and apply them to translation practice
--identify, analyze, and propose solutions for major challenges in translation
--justify one’s solutions in an adequate manner
--address key translating challenges collaboratively with other group members
--communicate efficiently and effectively with other stakeholders involved in translation tasks

テキスト・参考文献・資料など
/Textbooks, references, materials, etc.
No textbook is required for this class. However, students will be required to bring an electronic
dictionary (電子辞書) and a B5 notebook to every class. Students may be asked to copy materials
distributed by the instructor or to contribute materials that we will be translated during class.
Students are also encouraged to collect necessary information on the Internet. Finally, students are
encouraged to download and use Wordfast, a free TM software program.

/Way of learning
Students will translate a wide range of texts, including recipes, office correspondence,
advertisements, humor, business documents, financial reports, legal texts, and literary
texts. Students will be expected to act as professionals by submitting all assignments
on time and in an attractive format.

Class participation (5%); Theoretical knowledge and reflections (10%); Translation quality
assessment and reflections (20%); Group project, presentation, and reflection (15%)
