/Goal
This course is designed to assist students in learning about American society and culture and America's influence in the world.  Extensive use will be made of audio visual
materials depicting various aspects of American life.

Students should read the text and answer the comprehension
questions for each chapter before coming to class.

/Attainment Targets
The purpose of this class is to introduce the societies and cultures of Native Americans and others who came to America.Beginning with geography and an historical perspective in the first half, the course then moves into the
study of various modern cultures found in the United States including the dominant white culture and significant
minority cultures. It is also hoped that students will learn that there are different perspectives on American society
and culture and that not all American agree on the various problems and issues in the United States.

The text for this class will be available from the instructor.
学びの手立て
/Way of learning
Students should not hesitate to do their own research in order to understand some of the concepts,
for example Manifest Destiny and American Exceptionalism, discussed in this class. Students should
also understand that the films used in the class are directly related to chapters in the text and
that knowledge of both is necessary to achieve a high score on the exams. Paying attention in class, participating in discussions and asking questions will help students to achieve that understanding.
評価
/Evaluation
Evaluation will be based on the average of five written exams (20% each). The written
exams will consist of comprehension questions based on the textbook and essays based on issues
discussed in class, from the textbook and from films. One makeup exam will be allowed.
