/Goal
In Basic Seminar 1, students will develop academic skills through reading, research, and discussion of various topics, while honing academic and creative writing through reflections, short response papers and various types of presentation.

This course will be conducted primarily in English, except in cases where Japanese is necessary. Active participation, consistent effort, and independent study are required. This will be a safe environment where you will be able to make mistakes as part of the process.

Through this seminar, you will develop the following knowledge and skills:
1. Analyze readings and generate ideas about a range of topics.
2. Write short pieces that demonstrate reflective and analytical thinking.
3. Participate actively in class discussions and deliver brief presentations.
4. Develop informal responses into organized response papers.

Course materials will be provided. Please have a good English dictionary on hand, and be prepared to write by hand in a notebook dedicated specifically to this class.
学びの手立て
/Way of learning
Students who miss more than one-third of the total class sessions will receive a failing grade unless special circumstances are recognized by the university. Out-of-class reading, reports, and preparation for discussions and in-class assignments are required. Active participation in class is also expected.
評価

Participation (attitude and in-class engagement): 30%, Reflection journals and written assignments: 50%, Short oral presentations: 20%
