ねらい
/Goal
Building on Freshmen Seminar I, this course develops reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while introducing basic research, source citation, and academic writing. Students will also deliver an extended presentation on a topic related to their paper, strengthening critical thinking, discussion, and academic communication skills.

/Message
This course will be conducted primarily in English, except in cases where Japanese is necessary. Active participation, consistent effort, and independent study are required. This will be a safe environment where you will be able to make mistakes as part of the process.

/Attainment Targets
By the end of the semester, students will develop the following skills.

1. Critically read and discuss relevant topics and reflect on them in writing.
2. Develop one of their chosen research topics into an
academic research paper.
3. Evaluate and properly cite sources.
4. Give a formal presentation on the topic of their paper.

Course materials will be provided. Please have a good English dictionary on hand, and be prepared to write by hand in a notebook dedicated specifically to this class.

/Way of learning
Students who miss more than one-third of the total class sessions will receive a failing grade unless special circumstances are recognized by the university. Students are expected to complete out-of-class reading, reports, and preparation for discussions and in-class assignments. Active participation is also required.
評価
/Evaluation
Participation (attitude and in-class engagement): 30%, Written assignments and other homework 25%, Final paper (including all drafts) 30%, Final presentation 15%.
