ねらい
/Goal
This course introduces major themes, genres, and approaches in British and American literature through the study of poetry, short fiction, and excerpts of longer works. By reading from different periods and traditions, students will develop foundational skills in literary interpretation, close reading, and discussion. The course explores how literary texts reflect and question social, cultural, and historical contexts while introducing students to a range of narrative styles, including Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, gothic fiction, and fantasy.

Read and understand short literary texts in English.
1.Identify literary techniques such as perspective, symbolism, and metaphor.
2.Understand how literary works relate to historical, cultural, and social contexts.
3.Discuss literary texts and themes through class discussion and short written responses.
4. Develop basic skills and a personal voice for writing about literature through analytical and creative responses.

Selected excerpts and short texts will be provided by the instructor (PDF or handout). Students are expected to bring assigned readings and their reflection journals to every class.
学びの手立て
/Way of learning
The structure of this course will be chronological, with each unit providing historical background and close reading of selected prose and poetry. Students will keep reflection journals for assigned readings and use them to support discussion. They will also complete short presentations on selected authors or works. Vocabulary scaffolding will be incorporated to support comprehension of challenging language in the texts. There will be a final examination at the end of the course.
