A country’s identity is shaped by the stories it tells about itself. This course surveys American literature from the Puritan period to the present day, examining how writers from different historical moments have represented American identity, culture, and belonging. As we move across periods and movements, we will consider how ideas about nation, race, gender, environment, and technology influence literary expression, and how those ideas change over time.
